“Manual” is an examination of the repertoire of two instruments, linking greatly differing eras, functions, and characteristics: the Baroque harpsichord and Thadeus Frazier-Reed’s invention, the fluxharmonium. Sepand Shahab and Sivan Silver-Swartz will perform interpretations from the French Baroque harpsichord canon (Louis Cuperin, Jean-Henri D’Anglebert, Johann Jacob Froberger) alongside pieces by Jürg Frey, Eva-Maria Houben, and works they themselves composed. Frazier-Reed has commissioned pieces by composers Cassia Streb, Kari Rae Seekins, Lewis Keller, Michael Winter, Anqi Liu, Conor Hinfrey, Carolyn Chen, as well as composing his own piece for the fluxharmonium, an electro-mechanical synthesizer he’s developed built from the tonewheel generator of a Hammond organ.
